Certain restaurants are known for their expertise at turning out signature dishes really well. They've pinned down the ingredients, mastered the process, and gained a strong following as a result. Greenville has had much success cultivating great restaurants and creating a substantial market for Seafood. Locals can't get enough of the city's excellent food, and you'll often find them, along with eager tourists, at popular Larkin's on the River or at Bonefish Grill, a major player in the field. Make sure you see what all the fuss is about!

Bonefish Grill
Situated east of I-385 on Woodruff Road, this upscale grill combats the backwoods stigma of seafood restaurants with its hip environs. Its strong popularity also gives credence to a tasty menu. Fish (you choose from several varieties) is cooked over a wood-fired grill; the smoky flavor is accented with mango-, garlic-, teriyaki and butter-tinged sauces. Mussels, rock shrimp, calamari and lobster also make appearances, and pastas, chicken, steaks and pork round out the options. Waits can be common, so plan accordingly. (864-297-5142)

The Great Bay Oyster House
Located in downtown Greer, this relaxed, friendly hangout brims over with locals on weekend evenings. Great Bay serves up galvanized bucket loads of oysters, clams, and shrimp. The menu features the oyster variety of the week, available raw by the half or full dozen. Seafood is prepared straight from the boat, and most is available raw, steamed, broiled or fried. Tantalizing po boys are stuffed with the crisp vinegar based house coleslaw and piled high with your choice of fried seafood. Other great choices include the Kobe beef burger and boneless pork loin. Exposed brick walls and tasteful marine-themed art and photographs adorn the interior, and two large dining rooms posses a fully stocked bar, complete with tasty microbrews and plenty of buckets for the shells. Smart casual attire. (864-879-1030)

Cafe Rivera
Latin-inspired comfort food is the forte of Chef Bruce Rivera, and he puts his skill on full display at this smart downtown Greer kitchen, where diners are challenged to "taste the world." Start dinner with ceviche (made with the day's fish special) tostadas or beef empanadas then move on to Mayan-style roasted pork wrapped in banana leaf, pasta and gator sausage, or chicken with green pumpkin mole. Wash it all down with a Guatemalan beer or glass of South American red. (864-877-9600)

Larkin's on the River
Known for aged steaks, fresh fish, and romantic ambience, Larkin's on the River is a staple for fine dining in Greenville. Subdued lighting and cozy tables perfectly complement a romantic evening, and Larkin's excellent staff are happy to help you make a selection from their impressive wine list. Head chef Alex Castro's specialties include she-crab soup, shrimp and grits, aged filet mignon, and Chilean sea bass. During the summer, Larkin's hosts Rhythm on the River, a weekly outdoor concert series that features oldies, swing, and beach music. (864-467-9777)

Stella's Southern Bistro
Focusing on the best local ingredients while supporting local farmers, Stella's Southern Bistro features fine regional cuisine, inspired by the coastal Carolinas and the American South. Stella's offers an intimate, but cozy atmosphere that makes it the ideal choice for a date or a night out with friends. Start with a plate of their specialty cheese or Stella's Sampler, before enjoying one of their delicious entrees that include steak, shrimp and grits and fried chicken. You can finish your evening with an exceptional dessert or a drink from the bar. (864-757-1212)
