Meat and Three

Certain restaurants are known for their expertise at turning out signature foods really well. They've pinned down the ingredients, mastered the process, and gained a strong following as a result. Greenville has had much success cultivating great restaurants and creating a substantial market for the Meat and Three. Locals can't get enough of the city's excellent food, and you'll often find them, along with eager tourists, at popular The Lazy Chicken or at Stax's Omega, a major player in the field. Make sure you see what all the fuss is about!

Stax's Original
This Greenville landmark sports an unimpressive exterior and a nondescript decor, but having breakfast at Stax's is a local tradition. The warmth of the staff, many of whom have worked there for ages, is well known, and the hearty, down-home breakfasts are highly recommended. For a true southern biscuit, light and slathered with butter, this is the place. Eggs, hotcakes, grits and all the basics are hot and satisfying, just like your mom used to make. As for later in the day, the meat and veggie selections have been keeping Greenville well-fed for years — and their roast beef and gravy has won over many a palate. (864-232-2133)

Stax's Omega
Stax's Omega is part of the venerable string of Stax restaurants that have been serving Greenville for decades. A relaxed ambiance and a diverse crowd of locals make you feel right at home any time of day. Excellent service and fresh coffee provide a fitting complement to the hearty breakfasts. Huge, light pancakes, great French toast and fluffy omelets are particularly good. For lunch and dinner, a meat and veggie plate highlights the menu. This casual diner is also known for its bakery. A local tradition. (864-297-6639)

Tommy's Country Ham House
When you go to Tommy's, be prepared to see folks from all walks of life — from judges to CEOs to working men and women. Everyone claims Tommy's as one of their favorite places for down-home eats. As the name suggests, country-cured ham is their specialty, but the biscuits are a special treat too. A great place for an early breakfast, Tommy's also serves all the meats and veggies your mom wants you to eat! (864-242-6099)

Palmetto Fine Foods
A local standby, this burger joint boasts the best chiliburger in town. Sandwiches, onion rings and fries highlight the menu, the meat and three is popular at lunch, and they've even thrown in a few Greek specialties for the long-timers. The staff is welcoming and knows return customers by name. (864-271-2947)

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes
The delicious cooking at this Haywood Road eatery may call to mind memories of your grandmother's kitchen. Comforting sides like creamed corn, sweet potato souffle and mac 'n' cheese are sure to satiate your appetite, and the main dishes, all quite good, vary from day to day. Rest assured, no one leaves hungry! (864-627-9088)

The Lazy Chicken
The home cookin' at this establishment includes wings, chicken fingers, chicken pot pie, roasted chicken and other varieties of the bird of choice. There are numerous tempting sides to choose from, and several beef dishes are available, if you'd rather skip the chicken. (864-281-3864)

OJ's Diner
CNN gave the world a brief glimpse of one of Greenville's food treasures when John Edwards made a stop at OJ's Diner during his 2007 political campaign. This Pendleton Street meat and three serves up some of the most distinctive homestyle cookery this side of your grandmother's kitchen, and they do it with a brand of Southern-spun hospitality you just don't find much anymore. Rumor has it that this is the best fried chicken in town, and staples like sweet tea and collards are done to perfection. Stop by at breakfast for a scrambled salmon patty on a biscuit — Greenville's version of a bagel with lox! (864-235-2539)
