The Ciutat Vella ("Old City") district of Barcelona has a new hotel that is fast becoming one of the coolest places to stay. Located in the heart of the city's Gothic Quarter in George Orwell Plaza (better known as "Plaza Tripi"), Arai Hotel is a beautifully simple hotel that recently opened its doors at the start of 2013.
Although for some it might be a little too central, for those looking to get a feel for what it's like to live amongst the locals while at the same time situating themselves amongst the most historic Quarter's main highlights and monuments, this is an ideal hotel. Although Plaza Tripi's name precedes it as being one of the liveliest and one of the most eccentric courtyards in the Old City, if you don't want to hear the noise all night long, then request the Jewel Room or one of the higher floors so you can't hear the hustle and bustle going on below.
As part of the Derby Hotels Collection, Arai boasts rooms that are tastefully decorated and equipped with all of the essential amenities. Although there is no terrace or hotel bar, if you walk out the front door, there are about five to ten excellent bars and restaurants at your feet. Oviso is a particularly good and affordable restaurant.
