This cozy barbecue joint has been smoking up briskets and ribs on its wood-fired smoker since 1989. But the building's barbecue roots actually stretch back to 1948, when it opened up to Dallas locals as Howard and Peggy's Beef Bar. And though the current owners have upgraded the menu with the likes of quesadillas barbacoa and pulled pork sliders-- the place still retains much of its retro style decor--complete with vintage signs, red-and-white-checked table cloths and old-style booths. And don't think it's all carnivore territory over here, Peggy Sue's whips up delicious dishes for veggie-centric folk as well. Along with a nice $5.95 all-you-can-eat salad bar, fried okra, pinto beans and new potato salad, you'll find cheesy squash casserole and fresh steamed spinach. To drink, there's old-fashioned root beer floats, and not so old-fashioned microbrews and wine. Don't skip dessert, the apricot fried pies are a must.
