Bangkok's Sukhumvit Soi 11 is known for its rather highbrow be-seen bars and clubs. Places like Bed Supperclub or Q Bar have brought the wanna-be-seen crowd in for years, and lots of the new establishments here have followed suit, often offering hi-so without the service nor the goods to back it up. So, it's most refreshing to have a new kid on the block serving some fine non-toned-down drink concoctions at toned-down prices, not to mention a feelgood, unpretentious funky vibe. The Alchemist is located just next to Cheap Charlies, another bar institution in Soi 11, but while Cheap Charlies can be a tad overheated and fairly scruffy, not to mention packed to the sidewalk, the Alchemist has a slightly more refined vibe, yet feels just as mellow and laid-back. The owners, who are former DJ's at an FM radio station, seem to have found their passion, and have named their establishment after Paulo Coelho's book, with the potions in this case coming right out of the bar.
There are some great creations here, ranging from chocolate martinis to Potion #1, comprised of vodka, passion fruit, ginger, lime and coriander, or some new twists on mojitos and caipirinhas, along with plenty of fairly priced bottles of beer. If these drinks don't keep you busy, the Alchemist quotes on the walls will, and you will most likely end up chatting with your neighbors, as this isn't your snooty, dress-to-impress type place as elsewhere in this soi. Given the owners' backgrounds, the tunes are good, with live music events also occasionally scheduled, as well as other events such as comedy nights or themed parties. Best of all, the happy hour here doesn't end at 7 pm like most places, but goes until 9 pm, with regular specials on drinks every evening.
The Alchemist is an excellent spot to come feel the magic of mixology!
