Fine Dining

When you're looking for ambience as much as food, stellar restaurants can be hard to come by. After all, you want the whole package, not just a suitable meal. Fortunately, Cambridge delivers in spades. The city promises a superb selection of restaurants to sate your desire for Fine Dining. These places take care of the details, making you feel welcomed, plying you with wonderful dishes, and sending you on your way with an experience you won't soon forget. For a hint of the quality, consider Alimentum, which, along with Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and the rest, epitomizes fine dining in Cambridge.

7 Restaurant 17
Located inside the upscale University Arms Hotel, this swish restaurant serves up fine British cuisine with a continental twist. Floor-to-ceiling windows ensure it's always light inside, but the outside tables next to busy Regent Street aren't recommended. Go early and have a drink in the hotel bar. (1223-351241)

6 Midsummer House
With two Michelin stars, this fine-dining restaurant in a lovely old house on the River Cam guarantees you an evening of extravagance and innovative cuisine. The a la carte menu selections include French-Mediterranean fare such as Slow Roast Rump of Lamb with Courgette and Basil Puree, braised Flageolet Beans, Old York Cheese, and Confit Tomatoes. But to get the full experience, go for a six-course tasting menu, with such concoctions as Sweetbreads, Pistachio, Maple Syrup and Mouli, followed by Warm Kumquats with Lemon Thyme Ice Cream. All meals are skillfully prepared and artistically presented. Some tables are in the pleasant conservatory. (1223-369299)

5 Galleria
This small establishment enjoys a lovely location next to the oldest bridge in Cambridge and along the River Cam, right in the centre of town. A pleasant ambience is created by the soft background music and, at night, candlelit tables. Outdoor dining is available, weather permitting. The menu includes dishes such as roasted duck breast with a five spice marinade, chestnut mushroom & Chinese vegetable pilaf and a plum & char-sui glaze. It's fairly pricey, but the location makes it worth it. (1223-362054)

4 Loch Fyne Oyster Bar
The place to come for a seafood extravaganza. Housed in a charming pub that dates back to the 15th century, this restaurant serves thoughtfully prepared meals in an appealing atmosphere. Diners can choose to sit either in the intimate bar or the more open dining room. As the name suggests, oysters are the house specialty. Additional seafood and fish dishes are available, along with a wine list that complements different types of fish. There is also a counter where you may purchase fresh fish and seafood. 3 Alimentum
Opposite the Cambridge Leisure Park, this restaurant boasts 'ethical fine-dining'. As well as serving top-notch freshly-made food, they claim to reduce their carbon emissions as much as possible and to source all their food locally and from sustainable farms. It makes the food taste so much nicer to know it came from an ethical source! They even serve pig's trotter and four-hour roast pork belly. Tuesday night is Jazz night, with a £35 per head set menu including the jazz - check the website to find out who's playing and make sure you book your spot in advance. Bookings highly recommended. 2 Restaurant 22
Housed in the intimate setting of a typical Victorian townhouse a fair distance from the city centre, this fine-dining restaurant is a recipient of the Michelin Bib Gourmande and a 2 in the Good Food Guide. Seasonally changing menu items include British and European favourites such as rump of beef with red wine jus and roast chicken ballotine with ham and Armagnac stuffing. (1223-351880)

1 Fitzbillies
Fitzbillies is best known for the delectable Chelsea buns and chocolate cakes it sells in its famous shop, which has been going strong since 1922. But not many people know that the restaurant just next door is also one of the finest dining experiences in Cambridge. Small, intimate and friendly, you can dine on freshly made and innovative dishes, as well as delicious desserts of course. It's also open for brunch and afternoon tea. Fairly formal attire required in the evening. (1223-352500)
