The John Lewis store in the St. James Center, in the heart of Edinburgh, is the largest department store in Scotland. The store offers everything from electronics to women’s and men’s fashion, makeup and jewelry to home furnishings and specialty gifts to sports equipment and clothing, making it a popular destination for keen shoppers and window-shoppers alike. It also has an excellent toy department where children are encouraged to play with the toys, a great selection of children’s clothing and shoes, and probably the best baby changing facilities in central Edinburgh (even including a special area for those who would rather breast-feed in private), so it's also very popular with families.

For refreshments, you can choose between the cozy café, offering numerous tasty treats on the third floor, and a larger café restaurant on the fourth floor with a wide selection of food and drink and panoramic views of Edinburgh. Main meals in the restaurant are reasonably priced and there is always a decadent array of cakes and pastries to tempt even the most hardened dieter.
The John Lewis Partnership is Britain’s biggest and oldest example of worker co-ownership, and since 1929 every permanent staff member has been a partner in the business, sharing in its profits, which perhaps goes some way to explaining why the staff are all so friendly and helpful. The store also offers a number of notable extra services, such as personal shopper advice, a great wedding list and nursery list service and they run regular events promoting featured products (such as skin-care sessions for small groups and sneak previews of new fashion lines).
