10 Zika-Free Beach Destinations

These vacation spots are sunny and safe for moms-to-be

The approach of summer means many Americans are hitting the beach ... at least that was the plan until the Zika virus became a concern in many a favorite sunny, sandy destination. But don't give up those vacation days just yet. There are still plenty of beaches awaiting in (as of today) Zika-free locations.

1. British Virgin Islands

Part of the same archipelago as the popular U.S. Virgin Islands, the four main islands and 50-plus smaller islands and cays that comprise the British Virgin Islands are one of the most beautiful places in the world for cruising.

2. Anguilla

Another safe Caribbean spot, Anguilla is famous for its blindingly white sand beaches and too-blue-to-be-true waters – a perfect combination for a babymoon or summer getaway.

3. Hilton Head, S.C.

Families planning a beach vacation free from Zika concerns should check out Hilton Head. This domestic beach destination offers tranquil waters, tide pools, a boardwalk and loads of family-friendly entertainment options.

4. Turks & Caicos

The coral reefs surrounding the numerous islands and cays of the Turks & Caicos provide some of the most spectacular diving and snorkeling opportunities on the planet.

5. Ibiza, Spain

Concerned about Zika in Cancun? Why not head to Ibiza instead. The beaches of this Spanish island rival any in Mexico, as does the party scene – fueled by Europe's best DJs.

6. Cayman Islands

Safe and family-friendly, the Cayman Islands cater to all sorts of Caribbean tourists, from couples getting away from it all to parents traveling with kids in tow.

7. Bermuda

Travelers to the dreamy Bermuda can hop on a bike and explore the island end to end, stopping at its many pink sand beaches or secluded coves.

8. St. Kitts & Nevis

The twin islands of St. Kitts and Nevis feature golden beaches, verdant dormant volcanoes and a rich heritage from the eighteenth century, when both islands boasted significant sugar plantation economies.

9. The Bahamas

With more than 700 islands and 2,400 cays, the Bahamas offer a beach vacation for every travel style with near picture-perfect weather throughout the year.

10. Algarve, Portugal

Travelers who've been practicing their Portuguese for a trip to the Summer Olympics in Rio this year can opt for this beach-bejeweled coast in Southern Portugal instead.

Bonus: Alaska Cruise

Many destinations impacted by the Zika virus are the very same places frequented by Caribbean cruise ships. Moms-to-be or other cruisers with health concerns can skip the Caribbean but keep the cruise by heading to the waters of Alaska instead.

Consult the CDC website for the latest updates.
