Best Hikes and Treks Around the World

  • Torres del Plaine, Chile

Located in southern Chilean Patagonia, this river-rich park is a favorite destination of seasoned hikers. Pathways are marked clearly and refugios (places where hikers can rest, eat, and take shelter) are abundant.

  • Patagonia, Argentina

Patagonia is the renowned home of some of the most dramatic landscapes on earth, which of course makes it a premier destination for hikers. The name Patagonia comes from the Spanish word patagon, which Magellan and his expedition applied to native peoples that they mistook for giants.

  • Inca Trail, Peru

This trail is actually comprised of three distinct trails, each equally beautiful and varying in strenuosity. Though Machu Picchu is of course the end goal of each hike, there are plenty of other Incan ruins along the trails worth investigating. Because of concerns about overuse leading to erosion, the Peruvian government restricts the number of people allowed on the trail at a given time, so advance booking is necessary.

  • Annapurna Base Camp, Nepal

Rising out of the Kali Gandaki Gorge in the Himalayan region, Annapurna is home to some truly world-class treks. The ascent via Annapurna's south face is generally considered among the most difficult and dangerous climbs in the world.
