Rio de Janeiro is perhaps the most iconic city in Brazil. And that's not so surprising - the city boasts some of the world's most famous beaches and its hilly topography and natural reserves provide some of the greatest views of the country. In the 2014 World Cup, hosted in Brazil, Rio will join 11 other host cities, fielding important matches like the final game on July 13th, a game which will decide the winner from among 32 teams.
Estádio Jornalista Mario Filho, also known as the Maracanã, was originally built for the 1950 World Cup. It was once the largest stadium in the world and though it has reduced in size from subsequent renovations, it will be the focal point for soccer in Rio.
But if you're a soccer fan in town and can't get to the stadium, don't worry. Rio has plenty of venues to see the game.Brazilian soccer fans — Photo courtesy of Peter F.
FIFA Fan Fests
Fan Fests started during the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In later World Cups venues were chosen around the world, and in the 2014 World Cup, host cities like Rio will have official areas where fans can watch the game on large screen monitors. In Rio this will take place at Copacabana Beach, where thousands will come to enjoy the iconic surroundings. Here musical guests and cultural performances will entertain fans before and after matches.
Shenanigan's Irish Pub & Sports Bar
One of the larger bars in Ipanema (and one of the oldest expat hangouts), Shenanigan's is a friendly Irish-style pub that offers all the usuals: domestic and imported beer, happy hour specials, cocktails, and a smorgasbord of international bar food like tacos, pizza, ribs and sliders. It also has pool tables, darts, and most importantly, plays soccer games.Soccer fans attend a Fan Fest at a previous World Cup — Photo courtesy of Stewart
Lord Jim's Pub
Also in Ipanema, Lord Jim's is one of Rio's oldest bars. Opened in 1974, this pub serves traditional British favorites like bangers and mash and English breakfast, and not so traditional tacos, fajitas, and nachos. Draft beer, cocktails, and numerous specials make it a great place to cheer your team on the pub's 7 HD TV screens.
