    Dress for San Francisco fog

Keep in mind Mark Twain's infamous advice: the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. At the corner of Sloat and 19th avenue, Stern Grove is roughly thirty blocks from the Pacific, which blows in cold fog most of the summer. The trees and the bowl shape of Stern Grove should protect you from winds, though.

Great place to meet real San Franciscans

"San Francisco grew up with Stern Grove," Stern Grove executive director Steven Haines explains. Although people come from all over for this fantastic festival, many proud San Franciscans have been coming for generations. Stern Grove isn't just a great place to pack a picnic and dance the afternoon away - it can also be an excellent resource to meet local Bay Area natives who can offer the latest news on more hotspots, such as Ocean Beach and the San Francisco Zoo.  Even without a trip to the zoo or the beach, Stern Grove is a full day of fun. Pack a picnic, dance elbow to elbow with strangers eager to be friends, and get a real taste of a legendary San Francisco tradition.
