    Spring Horses Races at Keeneland in Lexington, KY

    April 5-26 For three weeks this April, Keeneland will host its spring racing meet, where the best Thoroughbred race horses in the country will go head to head on the nation's best Thoroughbred track. Keeneland and its exquisitely landscaped grounds have been designated a National Historic Landmark, so when you're not betting on a race, tour the grounds and learn about the history of Thoroughbred racing in the Keeneland Library.

    LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship Tournament in Palm Springs, CA

    April 1-7 The Kraft Nabisco Championship Tournament -- referred to by some as the Masters of the LPGA -- takes over the Mission Hills Golf Club in Palm Springs this April with $2 million up for grabs. As the first major tournament of the season, the Kraft Nabisco Championship gives golf enthusiasts a preview of who the year's heavy hitters might be.

    Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, SC

    April 6 The Cooper River Bridge Run -- a Charleston tradition since 1978 -- attracts racers from across the state and the country as one of the best 10k races in the world; past participants include Oprah Winfrey and Bill Murrary. If you need some extra motivation to keep your feet moving, 24 live bands will serranade runners from stages spaced every quarter-mile along the route.

    Red Sox Home Opener in Boston, MA

    April 8 This year, the Boston Red Sox will play their home opener against the Baltimore Orioles. While you'd have to fly to New York to watch the Sox play the Yankees for the first game of the season, there's a special electricity in the air as Fenway Park fills up with fans for the first home game of spring a week later.

    Cultural Festivals in New Orleans, LA

    You'll find double the fun in New Orleans this month, as NOLA hosts two big events:  April 11-14 This year, the French Quarter Festival -- the largest free music festival in the South -- will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with more than 800 local musicians, free family events, a jazz brunch and fireworks over the Mississippi River. April 26-May 5 At the end of the month, the New Orleans Fair Grounds hosts a celebration of the state's indigenous music, with Cajun, zydeco, Afro-Caribbean, jazz, blues and country beats filling the air during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

    New York Antiquarian Book Fair in New York City, NY

    April 11-14 Each spring, the Antiquarian Book Sellers' Association of America hosts one of the world's best book fairs, the New York Antiquarian Book Fair. More than 200 dealers will set up shop in the Park Avenue Armory with a vast collection of rare books, maps and manuscripts.

    World Ski & Snowboard Festival in Whistler, BC

    April 12-21 Live music, arts and winter sports come together at the World Ski & Snowboard Festival, Whistler's most anticipated event of the year. Tune in for ski and snowboarding competitions, fashion shows, film screenings, a dog parade and Canada's largest outdoor concert series.

    Bahamas Billfish Championship in the Bahamas

    April 14-19 Guana Cay in the Abaco Islands will host the first leg of the Bahamas Billfish Championship this April. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the tournament, with legs taking place in Harbour Island, Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbour through early summer. In Elbow Cay near Hope Town, also in the Abaco Islands, fishing enthusiasts will be competing in the Abaco Anglers Fishing Tournament throughout the month of April, seeking to snag the biggest deep sea or bottom-feeding fish.

    Chicago Mini Tango Festival

    April 18-21 Thanks to the Chicago Mini Tango Festival, you won't have to fly all the way to Buenos Aires to learn the tango. For four days, participants can join in beginner tango and masters classes taught by instructors from Argentina. Between lessons, watch performances by some of the world's most seductive and elegant tango dancers.

    Eeyore's Birthday Party in Austin, TX

    April 27 Since 1983, Austinites have been gathering in Pease Park on the last Saturday in April to celebrate the birthday of Eeyore, A. A. Milne's melancholy donkey.The festivities are much more upbeat, as the park fills up with drum circles, live bands, food vendors and picnickers. Special events include a costume contest, egg toss, sack race and a may pole. The local hippie population always make a showing at this event that keeps Austin weird.
