10 Luxury Hotels in Wine Country

  • A cottage at the Carneros Inn

    The Carneros Inn

Nestled within twenty-seven acres of vineyards and apple orchards, the Carneros Inn offers accommodations of all sizes, from regular rooms to expansive villas. Everything--from the finishes in the bathrooms to the sheets on the beds to the smiles from the attentive staff--is top of the line without being the least bit stuffy. Their casual cool is everywhere, embodied in their 'village style' set-up that allows guests to have privacy while still enjoying all that the larger resort has to offer, including two pools, the spa, a gym, a 'town square' with bocce ball courts, a market and a sport shop.

  • Cool off at the Solage Calistoga's pool

    Solage Calistoga

At the Solage Calistoga, so many things are simply perfect. The rooms are luxurious and newly updated, the spa was named #1 in the Americas by CondeNast Traveler (and #10 in the world), the pool is the best in the valley, and the restaurant, Solbar, has earned itself a Michelin Star. There are cruisers for peddling around and bocce ball courts for those who would rather stand up while sipping a cool cocktail.

  • Auberge du Soleil glows at sunset

    Auberge du Soleil

Nearly everything about this boutique hotel is transportive. Set into more than thirty acres of olive groves, Auberge du Soleil feels very much like being in Provence. Each beautifully appointed room has French doors that lead to private patios and wood-burning fireplaces. As one of Napa Valley's first fine dining spots, the restaurant there has earned its Michelin Stars over and over again.

  • Everything at the luxe Bardessono is environmentally responsible

Bardessono is innovative, maybe even visionary. As one of only two LEED Platinum certified hotels in the country, its eco-friendly values are implicit, and not at all preachy. Built from glass, steel, concrete and reclaimed wood, it's a chic, luxe, intelligent place to recharge. As a model of "green luxury," it sets the bar high for the rest of the industry. Bardessono is also steps away from everything delicious that Yountville has to offer.

  • Staying at the 12-room Milliken Creek Inn and Spa is an intimate affair

    Milliken Creek Inn and Spa

With only twelve rooms, Milliken Creek Inn and Spa is a cozy, luxurious retreat perched next to the Napa River just east of downtown. The staff manages to hit exactly the right note between gracious and relaxed, providing suggestions for guests as they plan out their days, setting out the gourmet complimentary breakfast in the peaceful garden or in a guest's room, and making sure that each stay is as perfect as possible. The hotel's "magic hour," or daily free tasting (complete with cheese and olives) says as much about the hotel's philosophy as the Frette linens and L'Occitane toiletries.

  • Set a bit apart from the busier parts of the valley, the Calistoga Ranch is a perfect place to unwind

    Calistoga Ranch

Nature is pure and evident in nearly every detail at the Calistoga Ranch, however a stay there is far from roughing it. Views are incorporated as seamlessly as natural textiles and carefully selected artwork. One- and two-bedroom lodges are luxuriously appointed, and each one has its own patio with a hot tub and fireplace. A full service resort, there is ample space to practice sun salutations on the yoga deck, a restaurant, fitness center and a private vineyard and oak groves.

  • The Yountville Hotel is perfectly located near all of the town's renowned restaurants

    Hotel Yountville

The Hotel Yountville (formerly the Yountville Inn) has just emerged from a multi-year overhaul bright, shiny and luxuriously new. It's rooms are airy and spacious, the service is friendly and while its a relatively small hotel, the layout makes it feel larger (in a good way). The Hopper Creek Kitchen also turns out one of the best breakfasts around.

  • The Poetry Inn is a perfect hideaway overlooking Napa Valley

    Poetry Inn

With only five rooms, the Poetry Inn is an intimate hideaway high up in the hills, and utterly luxurious, in a quiet, understated way. Guests are greeted by the innkeeper, Daniel, with cabernet, cheese and olives on the terrace, and move on to find that each room (two of them are suites) are outfitted with top of the line king-sized beds, heated bathroom floors, and outdoor showers. Decadent breakfasts can be taken in your room or on the balcony and start with Bouchon Bakery pastries followed by whatever you want, so long as the chef has the ingredients around.
