There are plenty of activities for the kids in the Southern Californian mountain communities, and for the parents on a budget, many of them are free. This family relaxes after climbing Strawberry Peak Lookout Tower and taking in the breathtaking 360 degree views at its top. Docents are on hand to answer questions about the history of the region-- all free of charge.

Grab a Bike to Explore Big Bear Lake
A great way to enjoy the lovely scenery of Big Bear Lake is on a mountain bike. Rent a bike for the day and explore the many biking paths that surround the lake. Big Bear Lake is a favorite location for television and movie crews. The Idaho plane crash scene in a recent episode of the popular television series "Grey's Anatomy" was shot in an unoccupied YMCA summer camp in Big Bear Lake.

Lake Arrowhead hosts an Oktoberfest celebration on its outdoor stage on Saturdays and Sundays from the end of September to the end of October, as does Big Bear Lake in its tented Oktoberfest pavilion.
