    Bell Fort Worth Alliance Air Show

    Featured performers at the Bell Fort Worth Alliance Air Show each October often include the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, Team Oracle, Navy F-35 Demo, All Veteran Parachute Team and Aftershock Jet Truck. Guests also enjoy the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest, STEM Discovery Zone, the Veterans’ Village and two Kids Zones featuring aviation-themed inflatables. The 2020 show is still a go for October.

    Mid-Atlantic Air Museum's World War II Weekend
    Reading, Penn.

    Reading Regional Airport plays host to one of the best air shows for WWII buffs: the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum World War II Weekend. Highlights include FIFI, the only flying B-29 Boeing Superfortress in the world, as well as a performance by the World War II Airborne Demonstration Team. Flight enthusiasts can even book a ride in a warbird.

  • Wings Over Houston Airshow

    Wings Over Houston Airshow

    The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Wings Over Houston Airshow takes place at Ellington Airport, where the Blue Angels, CAF WWII Warbirds and Tora Tora Tora take to the skies. Proceeds from the event – one of the largest non-profit civic events in the city – go toward a scholarship program for students interested in careers in aviation. Catch the action in October 2020.

    National Championship Air Races
    Reno

    While the annual National Championship Air Races in Reno every September has its fair share of airplane acrobatics, the real reason pilots come back year after year is for the racing. Six classes of aircraft go head to head on 3- to 8-mile race courses in the sky. The team behind the event is monitoring the situation in hopes of putting on a safe event come September.

  • The Great Pacific Airshow

    The Great Pacific Airshow
    Huntington Beach, Calif.

    During this October event in Huntington Beach, the Royal Air Force Red Arrows make their Southern California debut, joined by aerial performers like Red Bull Air Force, Canadian Forces Snowbirds and the SOCOM Para-Commandos, the only joint service parachute demonstration team in the U.S. military. The 2020 show is scheduled to take place in September.

  • Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show

    Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show
    Battle Creek, Mich.

    This mid-summer event in Michigan is an air show and balloon festival rolled into one – the largest Fourth of July air show in the country. For five days, spectators enjoy air shows of military and civilian aircraft, a twilight and night air show (among the largest in the world), fireworks, concerts, and hot air balloon launches. The 2020 event has been canceled but plans to return to celebrate aviation in 2021.

  • Thunder Over Michigan Air Show

    Thunder Over Michigan Air Show
    Ypsilanti, Mich.

    The U.S. Navy Blue Angels headline at this annual August event. Visitors can get up close with numerous vintage and modern planes or even hop in the seat of a Waco Biplane, B-25 Yankee Warrior or B-17 Yankee Lady for a flight. The event is on the calendar for August 2020.

    CAF High Sky Wing AIRSHO
    Midland, Texas

    This annual event at Midland International Air & Space Port features one of the nation’s most impressive vintage military aircraft flying displays, as well as a full lineup of civilian aerial performers and pyrotechnic groups (the “wall of fire” is always a fan favorite). The 2020 event is slated for September.

    Chino, Calif.

    The Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, Calif. is the setting for the annual Planes of Fame Air Show each May. This show, popular with aviation and history buffs alike, features some 50 vintage and historic aircraft in the sunny California skies. While the 2020 show was cancelled, Planes of Fame is slated to return in 2021.

  • EAA AirVenture Oshkosh

    EAA AirVenture Oshkosh
    Oshkosh, Wis.

    The town of Oshkosh, Wisconsin hosts the largest annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts in the country during the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. With more than 10,000 aircraft in attendance, there's a little bit of everything represented, including warbirds, home-built aircraft, ultralights and vintage planes. The 2020 fly-in was cancelled with an eye toward returning to the AirVenture flightline in 2021.

From late spring through mid-autumn, skies across the United States play host to some of summer's highest octane events: air shows. Attending one of these 10 American air shows, a selection of the best in the nation, lets aviation enthusiasts get up close to a variety of flying machines while watching stunt teams and pilots show off their skills high in the sky. And you don't have to be an enthusiast to have a good time either.
