Heady Topper wins Best Beer Label title

Alchemist Beer offering voted best by our readers

Oftentimes our first impressions of a new beer, chosen out of the myriad options now available at just about any grocer or bottle shop, come from the branding. A good beer label stands out from the crowd, piques our curiosity and represents the beer contained behind the label.

  • Heady Topper
    Alchemist Beer

Heady Topper, the flagship IPA from The Alchemist, is a limited release packed with more than 120 IBU of hoppy goodness. The label art created by Dan Blakeslee references this with a depiction of a man drinking the beer as hops foam up from the top of his head.

  • This Is Not My Beautiful Beer
    Fat Orange Cat Brew Co.

The label that graces This Is Not My Beautiful Beer from Fat Orange Cat Brew Co. is particularly meaningful, as it shows the brewery with the family dog Lacey, two goats Maeve and Bobby, one of the chickens (Dorothy perhaps?) and the late cat Billy for whom the brewery was named.

  • Sun Juice
    Stony Creek Brewery

Sun Juice, a refreshing Belgian summer saison from Stony Creek Brewery, is as bright and citrusy as its can. The artwork depicts the brewery’s mascot bird, as well as citrus fruit to represent the orange and grapefruit peel that goes into the beer.

  • Porkslap Pale Ale
    Butternuts Beer & Ale

Porkslap Pale Ale has one of those labels that makes you smile, much like the two pigs shown belly bumping. It’s a conversation piece perfect for this session beer made for enjoying socially without sacrificing flavor.

  • Alligator
    Brouwerij West

Alligator is a hazy IPA brewed by Brouwerji West, dry-hopped with Amarillo and Simcoe hops. The can art, like most from this California craft brewery, is colorful and playful, with plenty of pattern and nature motifs.

  • Double Stack
    Great Notion Brewing

It’s fitting that this Pacific Northwest brewery would pay tribute to a regional legend on the label of their American imperial stout. Double Stack, brewed with maple syrup and aged with whole bean Sumatra coffee, depicts Big Foot with a giant stack of pancakes and a hot cup of coffee.

  • Peanut Butter Porter
    Back Forty Beer Co.

When you see a can of Back Forty Beer Co.’s Peanut Butter Porter, you know exactly what to expect – big, creamy flavors of crushed peanuts reminiscent of that jar in mom’s pantry. They call it “comfort food in a can.”

  • Local Rocker
    Magic Hat Brewing Company

Burlington rocker and graphic novelist James Kochalka was brought onboard by Magic Hat Brewing Company to create the funky art on their Local Rocker labels – something of a self-portrait to celebrate this limited edition farmhouse saison.

  • Glycerin
    Hudson Valley Brewery

The dreamy pastel-hued labels on Hudson Valley Brewery’s Glycerin series will make you feel like you’re walking through a fairytale fruit orchard – appropriate for these double fruit sour IPAs flavored with ingredients like pink guava, red currants, milk sugar and boysenberries.

  • Figaro
    Old Town Brewing

Old Town Brewing proves that you don’t need bright, flashy labels to sell beer. The chocolate, toffee and roasted malt notes of Figaro, a fig-aged imperial stout, are hinted at in the elegant label design, featuring warm gold and brown tones.
