Oftentimes our first impressions of a new beer, chosen out of the myriad options now available at just about any grocer or bottle shop, come from the branding. A good beer label stands out from the crowd, piques our curiosity and represents the beer contained behind the label.

  • Cowboy Poet

    Cowboy Poet
    Archetype Brewing

Every can from Archetype Brewing out of Asheville features a haiku. For Cowboy Poet American Lager, the can reads, “Tumbleweeds and blood, spent my last coin on lager, my wives are angry.” It’s a playful, romantic take on the American West.

  • Lord Grey

    Lord Grey
    Three Taverns Brewery

The entire series of Sour Asylum beers from Three Taverns Brewery feature stunning label art, but Lord Grey ranks among the best. This earl grey tea sour ale shows a portrait of Lord Grey himself, with a lemon slice as a monocle and a top hat of tea leaves.

  • No Bones DDH Hazy IPA

    No Bones DDH Hazy IPA
    Indiana City Brewing Company

No Bones DDH Hazy IPA is part of a Craft Brew Doodle Crew series from Indiana City Brewing Company. The label was created by a group of local Indianapolis artists who meet at the brewery each month, passing drawings along every 10 minutes for a round-robin collaboration.

  • Doomsday Device

    Doomsday Device
    Drekker Brewing Company

Drekker Brewing Co. in Fargo is known for its bright label designs with a heavy 1980s influence. Doomsday Device is no exception. This double IPA is a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds, designed in collaboration with local artist and poster master, Punchgut. Whatever you do, don't push the red button.

  • Hopcromancer

    Hopcromancer
    Bad Weather Brewing Company

We love a label that tells a story, and Hopcromancer from Bad Weather Brewing Company does just that. The evocative artwork on this IPA shows us a sorcerer summoning a giant hop flower to add juicy citrus flavors to this twice dry-hopped brew.

  • Gravity Hammer

    Gravity Hammer
    Modern Times Beer

There’s no lack of color in the label art from Modern Times Beer in Portland, Oregon, and Gravity Hammer is among the most colorful. The bright tones hint at the equally bright flavors of raspberries, cranberries and strawberries that burst from this Berliner-style Weisse.

  • Mood Index

    Mood Index
    Little Blind

The hues that grace the can of Little Blind’s Mood Index hint at the flavors of passionfruit, orange and guava that characterize this sour IPA.

  • Time Bandits

    Time Bandits
Brouwerij West & Great Notion Brewing

You could lose a lot of time gazing at this colorful can, a collaboration between Brouwerij West and Great Notion Brewing. This T-Rex sized double IPA offers a tropical stampede of flavors, much like the stampede of brightly colored dinosaur skeletons making their way across the label.

  • 40 Thieves

    40 Thieves
    Zero Gravity Craft Brewery

This Double IPA features Citra, Nelson and Azacca hops to create a beer with notes of citrus and stonefruit. The playful label depicts illustrations of classic thieves from pop culture. How many can you identify before your can is empty?
