Readers choose Space Lettuce as Best Beer Label

Manic Pixie Dream Beer #1 takes second place

Oftentimes our first impressions of a new beer, chosen out of the myriad options now available at just about any grocer or bottle shop, come from the branding. A good beer label stands out from the crowd, piques our curiosity and represents the beer contained behind the label.

  • Space Lettuce
    Monday Night Brewing

This sophisticated and smooth double IPA from Monday Night Brewing comes in an equally sophisticated can, adorned with an outer space-inspired bowtie with many varieties of lettuce floating through the star-strewn sky, perhaps symbolic of the six varieties of hops used in the beer.

  • Manic Pixie Dream Beer #1
    Second Self Beer Company

The Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope comes to life across the cans of Manic Pixie Dream Beer #1 from Second Self Beer Company. This Russian imperial stout comes in a four-pack, with each can showcasing its own unique design. Background elements on the label hint at the ingredients within: bourbon, maple, coffee and oats.

  • Wake-n-Bake
    Terrapin Beer Company

The Terrapin turtle makes an appearance of the Wake-n-Bake label whipping up a batch of oatmeal cookies to go with his morning coffee. This coffee oatmeal imperial stout from Terrapin Beer Company is made from Jittery Joe's coffee.

  • Hopsynth
    Upland Brewing Co.

Born from a love of hops and sour beers, Hopsynth from Upland Brewing Co. boasts piney, citrus-forward hop flavors with a hint of tartness. The bold green and white color palette on the elegant label hint at the bright El Dorado and Citra hops found within.

  • Nosferatu Imperial Red Ale
    Great Lakes Brewing Company

Don't let the creepy label scare you away. The ruby-red color of Nosferatu Imperial Red Ale from Great Lakes Brewing Company is certainly vibrant enough to attract vampiric types from silent films of yore, but it comes from rich roasted malts balanced with a bitter bite of hops.

  • Supercollider
    Brouwerij West

The folks at Brouwerij West work with a different artist for each of their beer labels, and the sleek and colorful Supercollider can ranks among our favorites.

  • Two-Flat
    Hop Butcher For The World

This American pale ale from Chicago-based Hop Butcher For The World pays tribute to the Windy City with both its name and label art, a scratchboard illustration of a typical two-story brick residential building known as a two-flat.

  • Tropicalisima
    Creature Comforts Brewing Co.

Tropicalisima from Creature Comforts Brewing Co. takes the color palette and aesthetic from the brewery's Tropicalia beer and adds a monster reminiscent of the creature features of the 1960s – fitting given that Tropicalisima is a double IPA version of the original.

  • Splinter Cat IPA
    Big Axe Brewing Company

You don't need a big axe when you have Splinter Cat, a creature from fanciful lumberjack folklore capable of smashing through trunks of trees in the lake-filled region where Bix Axe Brewing Company makes its magic. The Splinter Cat IPA is characterized by a slight malty sweetness and notes of citrus and pine.

  • Butterfly Flashmob
    Solemn Oath Brewery

This Belgian IPA from Solemn Oath Brewery is packed with massive pine and citrus flavor from American hops that might make you feel that your taste buds are having their own dance party, much like the butterflies on the label.
