Best Eco-Friendly Hotel (2021)

As Kermit the Frog once said, "It's not easy being green," but these U.S. hotels have gone above and beyond to promote environmental sustainability. Along the way, they've earned certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the U.S. Green Building Council or other industry awards in sustainability. 

  • The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte

    The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte
    Charlotte, NC

    This 18-story facility is the first LEED Gold-certified hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Ritz-Carlton hotel chain. Among other sustainable design features, a green roof and garden with two beehives keep the building cooler while providing herbs and honey for the kitchen. Employees wear uniforms made from recycled plastic bottle materials, and the 146-room hotel includes an electric vehicle charging station.

  • Viceroy Snowmass

    Viceroy Snowmass
    Snowmass Village, Colo.

    The LEED Gold certified hotel is 30 percent more energy efficient than similar traditional properties, thanks to improved insulation, high-performance windows and an energy management system. All cleaning products are non-toxic and hypoallergenic, and shampoo and conditioner bottles get cleaned and resealed to limit waste.

    Chicago

    Virgin Hotels Chicago brings the variety of luxury to the Windy City you'd expect from a Richard Branson endeavor. The LEED Gold certified hotel uses green housekeeping practices, maintains a hotel-wide recycling program, promotes walking tourism in the Windy City and was built with green roofing material for more efficient storm water management.

  • Nature Inn at Bald Eagle

    Nature Inn at Bald Eagle

    True to its name, the LEED Gold certified Nature Inn at Bald Eagle demonstrates environmental stewardship through habitat restoration, water-efficient and native landscaping, rainwater harvesting, solar-thermal hot water and use of Green Seal Certified cleaning products throughout the hotel. Guests of this eco-lodge enjoy easy access to the trails of Bald Eagle State Park.

  • The Palms Hotel & Spa

    This Miami hotel enacted an “Inspired by Nature” environmental program in 2010 and has enacted many green initiatives ever since. The property is completely free of disposable plastics, while low-flow bathroom fixtures and UV windows conserve natural resources. The resort hosts regular beach cleanups, where guests can volunteer to help protect the local environment and wildlife.

    Situated on a mile of sandy beach just outside Portland, Maine, the Inn by the Sea features 61 rooms, suites and cottages for a relaxing coastal escape. Days begin with early morning yoga and garden tours, while evenings finish with beachfront sunsets and nightly fire pits. The full-service spa has earned a LEED Silver certification.

    Albuquerque

    The Hotel Andaluz in Albuquerque had earned LEED Gold Certification as one of the most sustainable historic hotels in the nation. A rooftop solar system heats water for the restaurant and laundry, while a motion-activated energy management system switches to energy saving mode when guests are out of their rooms. Most furniture and bathroom accessories are made from bamboo or rubber wood.

  • The Allison Inn & Spa

    The Allison Inn & Spa
    Newberg, Ore.

    One of the country's top destination resorts, The Allison Inn & Spa, also numbers among the greenest. This LEED Gold certified property uses solar-heated hot water, and solar panels generate seven percent of the electricity. Appliances are energy- and water-efficient, and the entire resort has eliminated the use of Styrofoam products and plastic bottles.

    This LEED Silver property in Miami offers 600 feet of Atlantic Ocean beach, plus earth friendly extras, like a electric house car, in-room reclaimed chalkboards, 100-percent natural bath products and monthly candlelit Dark Sky events in the lobby to raise awareness of global brightening.

    Situated on the East River waterfront with stellar views of the Manhattan skyline, the LEED Gold-certified 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge uses native greenery and reclaimed materials to bring a touch of nature to Brooklyn. The property includes 195 guest rooms, a rooftop bar with a heated plunge pool, a neighborhood cafe and a spa with nine treatment rooms.
