  • Ballmer Peak Distillery

    Ballmer Peak Distillery
    Lakewood, Colorado

    This new Colorado distillery, founded by lifelong friends Eric Strom and Austin Adamson, produces a core lineup of Australian-style gin; silver, gold and spiced rum; and an un-aged whiskey.

  • Rhode Island Spirits

    Rhode Island Spirits
    Pawtucket, Rhode Island

    All the spirits from Rhode Island Spirits are organic, vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO. The vodka, made from organic corn spirits, is distilled seven times and filtered through charcoal, while the gin features botanicals like juniper, angelica, orris, coriander, cardamom and citrus. The distillery also produces limoncello, cherry and cranberry Red Vodka and coffee and black walnut vodka.

    Erie, Pennsylvania

    Altered State Distillery in Erie, Pennsylvania has already started racking up the award for their hand-crafted spirits. The lineup includes an organic corn vodka, half a dozen whiskeys and a gin made with hand-collected botanicals.

    Harmony Spirits hand-crafts their small batch spirits using locally sourced grains. The lineup includes bourbon barrel-aged whiskey, triple-distilled corn vodka, bourbon whiskey, gin and a pair of rums.

    Dread River Distilling Co.
    Birmingham, Alabama

    Dread River in Birmingham, Alabama distills bourbon, whiskey, rye, vodka, gin and rum in small batches. Visitors can tour the distillery to learn more about the process of small batch distilling.

    Hatch Distilling Company
    Egg Harbor, Wisconsin

    The spirits produced by Hatch Distilling Company in Wisconsin are made with local ingredients whenever possible, whether it be honey harvested from their own hives, whiskey grains and brandy apples from local organic farms or gin botanicals foraged locally. The lineup includes vodka, gin, bourbon, apple brandy, limoncello and Harbor Dog (distilled from raw honey).

    Loaded Cannon Distillery produces their spirits in small batches from locally sourced raw materials. The current selection includes Florida corn or rice vodka, gin, six different rums and four whiskeys, with more in the works.

    The idea for Ferino Distillery was born on a trip to Sicily, where founder Joe Cannella discovered a cinnamon liqueur known as rosolio di cannella. This Nevada distillery now makes their own Cinnamon Cordial, as well as Fernet and Amaro.

    The distillers behind Wise Men Distillery take pure ingredients and custom-distill them into fine spirits. The lineup already includes gin, rum, vodka and a limited edition maple syrup moonshine, and a bourbon is aging in the barrel room for future bottling.

The number of craft distilleries in the United States grew by more than 11 percent between 2018 and 2019; the country now has more than 2,000 of them. With so many distilleries opening up each year, we decided to highlight some of the best on the scene. 

We asked a panel of American spirits experts to nominate 20 of the best new craft distilleries in the USA, each opened in the past three years. Our readers then voted for their favorites, and the results are in.
