Wingin' It: ATL Wings Dishes Out Gourmet Hot Wings in Phoenix

Restaurant offers 18 signature flavors of chicken wings

By Patricia Escarcega,

For many people, a plate of juicy hot wings is a savory side dish usually accompanied by pizza, beer or a Sunday afternoon football game.

But at Phoenix's ATL Wings restaurant, hot wings are the star of the show. This unique eatery caters exclusively to gourmet hot wings – and the hungry people who love them.

The juicy, boneless chicken wings at ATL Wings are available in 18 specialty flavors, ranging from the sweet honey barbecue to the palate-stinging "Toxic" hot sauce. The flavors are a mix of homemade dry rubs and sauces.

In a city full of sports bars with killer hot wings, ATL Wings stands out from the pack, winning top honors at the city of Mesa's annual Wingstock competition for several years in a row.

Some of the restaurant's specialty flavors include a citrus chipotle, cajun barbecue, teriyaki, garlic pepper, lemon pepper, garlic parmesan and an extreme honey habanero. So whether you like your hot wings sweet, tangy or spicy, ATL Wings has you covered.

To order, simply choose between traditional or boneless chicken wings; select your flavor of choice; and pick an order size. (The smallest order is six pieces, but you can order up to 96 pieces at one time!)

Not sure what flavor to order? You can try out samples of various sauces before placing your order.

All wings are served with your choice of homemade ranch or blue cheese dressing, although some of the wings are so juicy that you may choose not to indulge in the dipping sauce.

If you prefer to eat your hot wings with a side dish, ATL Wings has a small selection of appetizers. French fries, cheese fries and side salads are available.

But for a truly indulgent side dish, order the honey biscuits. Although you might be picturing buttermilk biscuits, these are actually deep-fried mini-donuts dripping in honey and topped with powdered sugar.

These hot treats are melt-in-your-mouth good, and they provide a surprisingly nice counterpoint to the chicken wings.

Of course, you'll need something to wash down all those flavors. ATL Wings has just the thing: a tall cup of refreshing Kool-Aid. The restaurant carries everyone's favorite childhood punch in three different flavors.

Although ATL Wings isn't fine dining, the bright red walls and corrugated metal accents give the dining room a clean and modern feel.

The counter service is no frills, but fast – a good thing, because it means you get your wings faster.
