Old Town Scottsdale is well-known for its charming shops and one-of-a-kind boutiques. Now, visitors have yet another reason to make a pit stop in this historic, downtown Scottsdale quarter: Super Chunk Sweets & Treats.
The new shop is the brainchild of husband and wife team Sergio and Country Velado, who bring an impressive pedigree to their new venture. Country Velado is the Executive Pastry Chef at Scottsdale's beloved Cowboy Ciao and Kazimierz World Wine Bar, and husband Sergio has more than twenty years experience managing gastropubs.
Country is one of the most admired pastry chefs in Scottsdale. In 2010, she was honored with the Best Decadent Dessert award by Phoenix Magazine. And in 2011 and 2013, she received the award for Best Desserts from The Phoenix New Times.

It's not hard to see why her desserts are so coveted. Great ingredients and creative techniques make for out-of-this-world flavor combinations that you won't find anywhere else. Sweet tooth specialties include duck fat toffee, mesquite chocolate chip cookies, toffeed mixed nuts, cashew brittle and housemade fruit roll-ups.
Super Chunk also carries its own line of gourmet caramel corn. There are four varieties available: brown butter fleur de sel, chocolate pretzel hazelnut, chocolate bacon and "junk food."
One of the most unique concoctions is the cowpuncher cookies. These cookies feature a Mexican-style chocolate infused with cayenne pepper, and then garnished with candied jalapeños. It's just the right blend of sweet and spicy.
You'll also find delicious, handcrafted pastries behind the counter, including peppermint brutti ma buoni cookies, full sized s'mores and pineapple upside down cakes. Of course, you simply can't go wrong with the award-winning peanut butter chocolate pie.
For a truly unique couple's dessert that's ready-made for Valentine's Day, check out the John and Yoko miniature cakes. These milk and honey cakes are made with coffee, bourbon, cinnamon tres leches and then layered with honeycomb candy and vanilla mascarpone. Each cake comes with an artsy photo of John and Yoko.
Feel like baking sweet treats in the comfort of your own kitchen? Be sure to check out the small freezer at Super Chunk, which the staff keeps stocked with different varieties of take-and-bake cookie dough. You'll also find small containers of gourmet ice cream.
Super Chunk will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The shop plans to stay open late for the popular Art Walk that happens each Thursday evening in downtown Scottsdale.
