It's no secret that San Diego residents love dining al fresco. In celebration of its five-year anniversary, Prepkitchen La Jolla wisely added a small patio to the exterior of the restaurant that greatly enlarges its overall dining space. The restaurant was originally designed to feature more take-out than dine-in favorites from its sister restaurant, Whisknladle, at a lower price.
But, like Whisknladle, Prepkitchen (affectionately known as 'PK') has become so popular that people do want to hang around and enjoy delicious food on the spot. The sleek new facade will also serve as a bridge between the restaurant and the neighboring stores that surround Sycamore Court, an area that has seen little change over the last decade.
The patio can seat up to 32 people and will glow under contemporary lights in the evening. Not to worry: heat lamps keep the space warm on rare chilly evenings. Go ahead and bring the dog, too, as pets are welcome to join.
What is on the menu, you ask? Seasonal comfort food for lunch, happy hour and dinner on the weekdays with the addition of breakfast and brunch on the weekends. Favorites include local fish tacos (a dish that San Diego is famous for), mussels and fries, slow-roasted pork belly and more. The deli counter offers a number of tapas and charcuterie to go so you can enjoy Prepkitchen at home.
The patio is ideal for some post-work or lazy afternoon tapas, when sangria is $5 per glass and bottles of wine are 25% off. Do order the cutting board, which features a delicious assortment of house-cured meats, cheeses and accompaniments. Other shared plates are perfect for snacking, as well.
Though this would involve skipping the patio, we'd be remiss not to mention the PK family meals (which are big enough for four adults), available by take-out only. You'll receive a choice of soup or salad (We highly recommend the Caesar.), brick chicken or seasonal pasta, potatoes and vegetables, as well as two (They are big!) of the famous salted caramel brownies.
For what you get, the $79 price tag makes the meal a great way to impress unexpected guests. If parking is troublesome, get it delivered for a small fee, or they'll even run your pre-paid order out into the parking lot.
The success of the La Jolla location led to the opening of Del Mar and Little Italy Prepkitchen restaurants, with plans for more to come in the future.
