Tourist Club: Marin's Redwood Watering Hole

Charming Bavarian-style Hotel in Muir Woods is a Marin Gem

Although almost everyone has heard of Muir Woods, few know about the Tourist Club, the wonderful Bavarian-style hotel right in the heart of this famous redwood forest. Muir Woods — Photo courtesy of wikipedia

Only accessible by foot, the Tourist Club is part of a larger "Nature Friends" network founded in late 19th century Austria to encourage people to enjoy and study nature. Members can stay overnight at a reasonable rate, but you don’t have to stay overnight to appreciate this gem.

The quickest route to the Tourist Club is to park at the Ridge Avenue Lot and walk a 1/4 mile down their driveway. But the most beautiful route is through Muir Woods itself, winding through the main Muir Woods path, then climbing the switchbacks to the sundrenched patio where you can slake your thirst with an impressive selection of Bavarian beers.Tourist Club — Photo courtesy of guidemehome2marin.com

Although they are consistently open to the public Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5 on the first, third and fourth weekend of the month, be sure to check ahead for special events. The Tourist Club is low-profile by design, but they do encourage visitors to their popular fund drives, a can’t miss event if you happen to be in town. Oktoberfest at Tourist Club — Photo courtesy of picsfromtrips.com

Regardless of the time of year, though, if you’re looking for the perfect spot in Muir Woods to prop up your aching feet and enjoy a stunning view of this majestic forest, be sure to check out the Tourist Club.
