Muni is short for the San Francisco Municipal Railway, making up just a portion of the public transportation options provided by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). As one of the oldest public transit systems in the country (founded in 1912), Muni is responsible for the transportation of over 200 million people per year, operating 24/7. Convenience is the name of the game for Muni; there are stops within 2 blocks of nearly all city residences and 80 different routes. Much more than transportation, Muni offers a slice of history with operating streetcars and the iconic cable cars, in addition to more modern modes that include light rail, electric trolley and diesel buses. Tickets can be purchased at Muni subway stations, or visitors may opt for a passport or CityPASS, available in different durations (1, 3 or 7 days). Visit the SMFTA website to locate passport vendors or purchase a CityPASS online.
