Since opening in 1964, Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto’s Downsview community has been updated several times to keep up with retail trends. Now, Canada’s fifth-largest mall is undergoing a $220 million facelift to keep it on the cutting edge of fashion.
The expansion will add 190,000 square feet of retail space to the mall when it’s completed in November 2012. And it will introduce several popular clothing, jewelry and other brands to Toronto shoppers. Ted Baker London, Kate Spade New York, Tesla Motors, Ann Taylor and Loft will open their first Canadian stores in Yorkdale. Popular U.S. brands Diesel and the North Face, which already operate stores in Canada, will also open locations in the mall.
Over the past decade, Yorkdale has become one of Toronto’s best shopping destinations for upscale fashion and other items from retailers including Michael Kors, Burburry and Crate & Barrel.
The mall has also recently made changes that will appeal to tired and hungry shoppers. Yorkdale’s new food court, Dine on 3, opened in June 2012. Customers can call ahead to reserve a table, and now have the option to sit near one of two large fireplaces or on the outdoor terrace. The 19 dining options include an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria, the world’s largest location of Italy’s Espressamente illy café and an outpost of Toronto’s popular La Paloma gelato shop.
Dine on 3 also features a concierge desk equipped with everything customers need to recharge and get ready for more shopping. It offers complimentary newspapers and magazines, glasses of chilled fruit-infused water, and everything from lint brushes to diapers, perfume and mints.
