The company limits groups to two to four people, ensuring that climbers have as much one-on-one attention as possible.
Travelers should wear comfortable climbing or workout clothes, but Denver Adventures supplies all the gear: ropes, helmet, harness, rock climbing shoes, carabineers, chalk – and the know-how to not only choose a route but also conquer it.
One of the most sought after locations for rock climbing is the south side of North Table Mountain in Golden, Colo. At this spot, expect to climb a steep, rocky switchback trail before reaching the designated climbing area.
Guides will set the route while climbers gear up and squeeze into tight fitting rock climbing shoes and harnesses. Before starting the climb, guides teach commands, how to do gear and buddy checks, and the basics of climbing. Along the way, guides provide tips and encouragement.
Our group set out against the wall one at a time. At times we felt like giving in, but guides kept us moving with words of encouragement.
“Make sure you have three points of contact on the wall at all times. Hips and feet against the wall and try to keep arms almost at full length,” our guides advised.
If we struggled to make the next move, more tips helped keep us focused, inching towards the top. Some people in our group even surprised themselves with moves called mantles, which is climbing lingo for lifting yourself over a ledge.
At the top, expect to take in wide open views of Golden, the Coors Brewing Facility and the entire Front Range, from Lookout Mountain all the way south to Pikes Peak. On the way back down, it's an easy ride as travelers sit back in their harness and enjoy the repel to the bottom.
Guides make sure that the experience is about more than just climbing. Expect to learn to belay, to tie climbing-specific knots like a figure 8 and also safety commands.
Denver Adventures offers 5-hour tours daily at both 8:30 am and 1 pm. The cost is $129.99 per person.
Denver Adventures also offers other outdoor activities in the great Denver area including zipping, rafting and mountain biking. When the seasons turn, snowshoeing and snow tubing are game on.
