KOKI Beach is a beachfront restaurant and lounge that stands out as Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica's most exciting new place to eat, drink and take in the seaside scene, which is arguably the best in town. View from Koki Beach — Photo courtesy of solamo
Innovatively designed with leaving as little impact on the environment as possible, KOKI Beach is constructed almost entirely from reclaimed and upcycled materials, from tables made from old doors and chairs fashioned from forgotten floorboards to the elevated deck over a “rock cage” instead of poured concrete, the décor is not only sustainable, it’s entertaining.
The space feels cozy, yet it’s completely open to the elements; different levels and trees left in place complement brightly-colored details like the painted coconut lampshades and rustic handmade rocking horses in front. With such emphasis placed on presentation, one might expect the food would have a hard time meeting similarly high standards. But, in the case of KOKI Beach, the menu is full of appetizing dishes that taste even better than they sound, like the yucca chips served with a tangy salsa.
On special occasions and holidays, KOKI Beach goes all out with creative displays like a Christmas tree made entirely of wine bottles and gigantic papier mache characters for Halloween.
