Somewhat surprisingly, Costa Rica is not awash in excellent sushi. What with all the water brimming with seafood, why not? Well once you've sampled the selections at Samurai Sushi in Escazú, it may seem that all the brilliant sushi chefs are employed there, and that the lion's share of fresh fish must be that which lies in front of you. In a style akin to Benihana, the staff st Samura Sushi whips up an impressive array of teppanyaki, grilled to perfection right before your eyes, and it tastes even better than it looks. The menu is all encompassing, from miso soup and seaweed salad to tuna rolls and salmon sashimi, even Samurai's Japanese tempura is hard to beat.
Experimental folks will enjoy tasting the fusion rolls, such as the Costa Rican roll which includes platanos, shrimp and cream cheese, or the Tropical Roll which features shrimp tempura, avocado and mango. Hot and cold sake are on tap, and dessert options include a delectable grilled Teppan Yaki ice cream and a Banana Samurai, both worth saving room for.
Find Samurai Sushi tucked inconspicuously in a strip mall; its modest exterior hides a spacious dining room that can accommodate large parties for special occasions.
