Good bites for late nights in Fort Myers

You never know when you are going to be hungry, sometimes it happens at 6 pm but other times it’s midnight. If you are out and about in Fort Myers with a stomach that is grumbling, but you would like to avoid the 24-hour fast-food restaurants, it’s good to know where to go.

Pizza is always pleasing, especially when it comes from the Downtown House of Pizza. Serving homemade slices and entire pies until 3 am in this casual spot, you can pick from a variety of mouthwatering toppings, cooked to perfection. For pizza on the other side of the Caloosahatchee River, in Cape Coral, Nice Guys is the place to be and often adds live entertainment to the menu.

Also in Cape Coral, the Lobster Lady Seafood Market and Bistro and accompanying Chill Bar serves a full menu until midnight along with a late-night happy hour and live music too.

The choices for dining late cover all areas of town and just about any craving you may be having. Because the area is seasonal, hours may change in the summer so it never hurts to double-check.

The long-established Nick & Stella's maybe in a strip mall, but they've beautified their piece of sidewalk with palm trees, umbrellas and lots of TVs. The family behind the name are of Greek heritage and make delicious gyros and spinach pie. In addition, you'll find lots of Italian specialties, including popular pizza pies and calzones. Even better, the kitchen stays open until midnight. Stop by and catch a game replay on one of the 40 televisions, playing every sport and every team you might want to see. Although the owners are Pittsburgh Steelers fans, they are quick to welcome everyone into their family establishment.

RonDao's has been serving up great pizza, in an exciting atmosphere for watching sporting events, for some fifteen years. The main sports bar has island seating...rows of narrow bars facing a GIANT projector screen. With 75, yes 75 big screens try the signature seafood pie; loaded with shrimp, scallops and crab in a rich white sauce. Not only can you catch up on scores late at night but the kitchen cranks out food until 1:30. College fans rooting for Iowa and Notre Dame gather here on a regular basis, although there is more than enough room for everyone. The bar is also filled with pool tables, foosball and arcade games. You won't be bored here.

Big Ten Tavern

With 16 big-screen TVs, 13 taps, an open floor plan, and corn hole games, you might guess this is a fun place to watch a game, but it also has a creative and satisfying menu line up with a kitchen that serves late. The wings are juicy with house-made dipping sauces, and the nacho chips are hand-cut from flour tortillas. A brick oven gives the pizza a crisp, light crust; it's special ingredients are garlic butter and Parmesan cheese. Regulars love the chicken and waffle sliders drizzled with maple honey mustard. But the big deal is tater tops; nuggets of shredded, deep-fried potatoes, with a dusting of ranch seasoning. Order alone, Greek-style or covered with a wide variety of toppings to satisfy almost any craving.

Recommended for Late Night because: A sports bar that caters to the late-night and hospitality crowd with more offerings than just wings and pizza, although they are legendary here.

Gina's expert tip: Check the online calendar for trivia nights and karaoke.

The Gulfshore Grill is one restaurant with two great vibes. The indoor portion provides quiet, the comfort of air conditioning and views of the Gulf of Mexico from every seat. The outside deck, also called The Cottage, serves the same menu, and this is where you find the late-night action. There is live music almost every evening and the kitchen stays open to make sure you can still get the famous Beach Bread while you tap your toes. Grouper is also a popular menu item along with dishes that have a Southwest flare. Take advantage of the valet service as towing companies are active in this area and parking spaces are limited.

Recommended for Late Night because: This restaurant on the rooftop of one of the most famous party places on Fort Myers Beach serves well-prepared food with an amazing view.

Gina's expert tip: Great spot to watch the Spring Break beach action, from a safe distance.

Bonita Springs

This is one of those spots that locals hate to let outsiders in on, but outsiders are dying to find. Located behind Benson's Grocery Store, it's a rustic hidden gem where you'll find hungry entertainers and DJ's after their gigs, law enforcement, and partygoers all getting food to go or eating at picnic tables. This is not just a late-night place but also early morning, opening at 5 am with breakfast fare. The kitchen doesn't close on Friday and Saturday nights, it literally stays open 24 hours. Famous for tacos, the menu also includes tamales, quesadillas, tortas, and a condiment bar loaded with extras. The portions are generous, the prices enviable and the quality fantastic. Great value and a good find, if you can find

Recommended for Late Night because: Found behind an old grocery store, this hidden gem stays open 24 hours on Friday's and Saturdays, satisfying your taco cravings.

Gina's expert tip: The website is in Spanish. Best to check out Facebook if you are more adept at English.

Downtown House of Pizza

For years, the Downtown House of Pizza has been the premier spot to get a late-night slice that hangs off the edge of a paper plate. Serving until 3 am, patrons who show up at this hour are delighted. You'll find a line out the door for the hand-tossed pizza, but it moves relatively quickly. The case is full of pies loaded with all kinds of toppings, just waiting to be finished off in the hot ovens. While the slices are big, if there are more than a couple of you ordering, it's worth it to get an entire pie. Seating inside is limited and it can get hot with those ovens cranked up, but there are benches and tables in the back courtyard too.

Recommended for Late Night because: This pizza joint is the hottest spot downtown after the clubs close, not just because it is open late, but also because it's GOOD.

Gina's expert tip: Good for a fast lunch also

Society occupies a huge indoor/outdoor space, has a wine room, a private dining room and a spacious rooftop entertainment area known as the Treehouse. The kitchen is huge and stays fired up until midnight on weekdays and 2 am on weekends serving an array of savory dishes. The spirits are premium, the cocktails are craft and more tiki-like at the Treehouse Bar. Find entertainment seven days a week, mostly bands and musicians, however, nationally known DJ's often get the party going on Friday and/or Saturday nights. Check the entertainment schedule as it changes often, along with food and drink offerings to keep things fresh and exciting.

Nice Guys Pizza and Wings

A funky dimly lit pizza joint in Cape Coral, Nice Guys has almost a cult following late at night. It's small, so you may have to wait for a table, but it's worth it. The pizzas are fantastic; try the Truffle Shuffle for something different. Until 1:30 am you'll also find subs and salads here and their infamous garlic knots. After a night of partying, things like fried pickles, cheese stix and deep-fried Oreos also resonate well with patrons. A bit rock-n-roll, a bit hippy, this spot with an eclectic cool vibe also has an exotic selection of craft beers. They've expanded to include an adjoining lounge with a stage, cozy seating and games. The staff and customers at Nice Guys, really are NICE.
