“When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro,” were the words of the legendary Gonzo journalist, Hunter S. Thompson. The infamous quote has been used by bands, artists and other creative minds for years, but there are few places that it seems to fit more perfectly than on the island of Key West.Where the Weird Go Pro stand — Photo courtesy of Where the Weird Go Pro
Conchs embraced their “weird” reputation and have applied the quote to their friends and family for years, and now the slogan has made its way onto novelty items for tourists and locals alike and can be ordered online with Where the Weird Go Pro. The growing business sells beach towels, t-shirts, bumper stickers, canvas bags and 'beverage' cups – always a necessity in Key West.
“I basically designed items that I knew my friends would enjoy,” said Amy Culver, owner of Where the Weird Go Pro. She also customizes items for corporate groups, weddings and private events.

“We've been saying that for ages here in Key West,” said Amy. When someone hadn't been seen in a while, the locals would ask the question: “Where’s so-and-so?” and the answer would always be “they just went pro.”
As of June 2013, Where the Weird Turn Pro is taking online orders through Facebook and will deliver to customers around the island. Additional products are being developed including another clever saying about Key West: “It’s Noah’s ark with a disco ball.”
