Brutus Seafood is well-known among the locals in Marathon, Florida for its fresh catches that they deliver daily across the nation. Key West pink shrimp, mahi mahi, stone crab, and conch are just a few of the items that owner, Bruce Irwin ships to anxious customers. Being born and raised in Marathon, he has spent his entire life fishing but recently, his business expanded from the sea to “the plate,” which Bruce contributes to his love for cooking. The new restaurant concept opened in October 2012 and quickly created a buzz among foodies seeking a new lunch spot with casual table service. No fancy frills here: menu items and 8 to 10 daily specials are displayed on blackboards like any traditional, family–operated seafood joint. Expect items like lobster melts with fresh spinach and pepper jack cheese, shrimp tacos and quesadillas, blackened yellowfin tuna salad sandwiches, and seafood chowder. Even though they specialize in seafood, the ribeye sandwich is a must for those that prefer land items. The restaurant also offers mojo pork in their pressed Cuban sandwiches, and smokes their own turkey breast. Be aware that the restaurant is only open until 6pm (but is looking to extend their hours).
