If there’s one thing there is a lack of in Key West, it’s posh martini lounges and with good reason: Key West “ain’t” Miami! Notorious for its sticky-floor style bars on Duval Street that invite visitors to let loose, the island has several other dive bars that aren’t simply waiting rooms for cruise passengers looking to get a little buzz. Case in point: Don’s Place.Don's Place Indoor Bar — Photo courtesy of Don's Place
Although removed from the typical bar scene, Don's Place offers a true Key West experience that comes complete with a liquor store and a drive-up window. (It's not every day that you see one of those anymore.) There are two bars: a traditional indoor bar with 10 televisions, darts, video games and a juke box and – in true Key West style – an outdoor tiki bar with a ping pong table, corn hole game, foos ball, four more televisions another juke box.
This is one of the locals' choices for the Superbowl when everyone brings a dish to pass. Cookouts are a regular event on Sundays during football season, beers are dirt cheap, and drinks are strong. Other events include wine tastings, yard sales, St. Patty’s parties, book signings, birthdays, and just about any other reason for the locals to get together over a pint.
