Long a host to seafaring travelers since it was settled in the early 1800s, Key West now sees about 1 million cruise passengers each year. The ships usually dock at either Pier B near the Truman Annex, Mallory Square or the Navy base Outer Mole near Fort Zachary Taylor. Passengers docked at the Mole are shuttled off the base via trolley. At just two miles long by four miles wide, the island is the southernmost city in the continental United States located at the end of the long chain of Florida Keys. It's only 90 more miles to Cuba. When thousands of cruise passengers disembark into the small section of Old Town with the mile-long Duval St. as the main thoroughfare, it can be hard to break away and find the real flavor or Key West. Rent a bike or hop on a trolley and explore the funky shops, Civil War forts, secluded beaches, Victorian architecture and quaint cafes. Don't worry, the many, many bars will find you. Let the laid-back vibe seep into your pores, and watch out for the chickens!
