Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach has had a few mail stops that have experienced continuous turnover. While 223 Clematis has been one of those, its current inhabitant – The Alchemist Gastropub & Bar – looks to buck the trend.
The vibe at The Alchemist has a mysterious quality. Walking in to the dimly lit establishment – complete with dark woods, tin bar and vintage fixtures – you get the feeling you've stepped through a time portal into an early 20th-century apothecary lab.
The live music selections often play this up. Otherwise, the classic black-and-white screening of the night gets you there.
You have the option to sit inside at the bar, a high top or a bench with large comfortable pillows. There's also a complete dining room setting for larger groups. Al fresco dining is available for those who want to be out in the elements.

The two main focuses at The Alchemist are craft cocktails and bar bites. Starting with the libations, The Alchemist has a number of solid, innovative options. The over 10 martini choices feature Grey Goose; the Classic Martini comes with blue cheese-stuffed olives.
The wine list is deep, including a 2004 vintage Bordeaux and Rose options. There are many local craft brews, and the 80-ounce Yuengling beer tower is a hit on football Sundays.
Bar bites take on a whole new meaning here. Selections like the calamari fries and lamb lollipops will leave patrons salivating for more. The Korean food truck tacos are a must-order. Larger meals include a selection of burgers, wood-fired pizzas and seafood selections. (Check out the lobster mac and cheese.)
If you want to get just a sampling of The Alchemist Gastropub & Bar before committing to a full-blown occasion, then check the spot out for happy hour daily from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A drink or two will get you hooked.
Live entertainment is a regular occurrence Friday through Sunday. Local blues and rock bands take the stage to provide some background and context to this wonderful watering hole and eatery.
Brunch goes down Saturday and Sunday, all the way through 4 p.m. In keeping with brunch tradition, jazz music is often featured to help wake you out of your "funk." The "Antidotes for Alcohol Poisoning" section of the menu will help see you through your worst morning moments.
The Alchemist is an exciting new concept on the Clematis Street strip. It's unique, and it challenges the status quo of area bars.
