"That does not exist" – a gruff, 60-ish Frenchman told the Far Eastern couple who has asked him where to find the"wall of love". Fortunately, we were there to tell them where to go: just in time to dispel the look of disbelief in their eyes ("is the author of our guidebook a fool? or have we fallen victim to a cruel hoax?"), or, rather, to transfer this look to the guy whom they had asked for the way. After sixty years of living in Montmartre, the look in his eyes seemed to say, how come I have never heard of this? In the gentleman's defense, it is probably fair to point out that gruff Parisian men of a certain age are somewhat underrepresented among the people who undertake a pilgrimage to the "Wall of Love" in the garden at the back of the Abbesses metro station. It appears that such men find little interest in a large piece of masonry that bears the inscription "I Love You" in (nearly) all known languages of the world (more than 300, as a matter of fact). Some people, nevertheless, do, and if you are one of them, now you know where to go – without having to bewilder the local elderly.
