Since opening in 1847, First United Methodist Church has attracted locals and visitors who desire a place to worship in Atlanta. The church's Gothic-inspired architecture (the building dates to 1903) makes it a noticeable landmark in the area, and over the years, many prominent citizens have been members of the congregation. First United Methodist is such a recognizable landmark that Margaret Mitchell singled it out as the only Atlanta church worth mentioning in Gone with the Wind.
