Put away your snow boots and head to Savannah in December to enjoy mild weather, smaller crowds and plenty of holiday cheer. There are numerous advantages to visiting Savannah during the off-season, but December in particular is a great time to descend upon the historic city.

Savannah’s average December high temperature hovers somewhere around 63 degrees, so visitors can comfortably walk through the Historic District ‘s 22 squares, dine outdoors and even enjoy a carriage ride.

Despite the mild temperatures, the city goes all out for the holidays, with beautiful lights and decorations throughout Downtown Savannah. Shoppers can pick up last-minute gifts and take advantage of holiday sales on Broughton Street, a shopping area that features boutiques, gourmet shops, galleries and more.

For a fun, free December activity, take one of the city’s three ferries from River Street to the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa. The ferries normally have a nominal fee for adults and older children, but for the past couple of years, it has been waived for all visitors during most of December. The ferries travel across the Savannah River to Hutchinson Island, where guests can view the Westin’s annual gingerbread house display, an impressive collection of candy creations crafted by professionals and children.

December is also a great time to hit up the city’s restaurants and bars, which tend to be less crowded during the holiday season. You may even be able to score a coveted table at Rocks on the Roof, the Bohemian Hotel’s chic outdoor bar.

When it’s time to turn in, let your head hit the pillow at one of Savannah’s bed and breakfasts.
