Ariston bakery was founded in 1906 by the grandfather of the current owners and is considered a landmark in Athens. Situated very close to central Syntagma square and the main shopping district, Ariston is famous for the delicious tyropites- tasty cheese pies- made with the genuine traditional recipe. Cheese pies have a long and interesting history in Greece, dating back to ancient times and exist in various types. The classic kourou- which means dry pastry without oil- is filled with soft cheese and is ideal for a mid morning snack or anytime of the day. At Ariston the cheese pies and also the various other pies-with courgettes, aubergines, spinach, leeks, mushrooms and more- are all made by hand, prepared and baked on the premises and served fresh every day. Around noon there is usually a queue outside, as passerby feel the need for one more cheese pie. A must when visiting Athens, Ariston is also popular with students, shoppers, office workers and has been a favorite for many generations of Athenians.
