Sounio is a popular day trip from Athens at a distance of about 65 km, and the drive is enchanting, passing close to secluded bays viewed from above and residential areas like Lagonisi, Anavyssos and Saronida, with fish restaurants on the beach. Sounio is famous for the ancient temple of Poseidon (Neptune), built on the promontory with a breath-taking view of the Aegean Sea. Athenas temple is built lower down on the slope. Watching the sunset from Sounio is a romantic experience nobody should miss. In the same area is one of the oldest and lesser known ancient theatres, Thoriko, dating back to the 6th century B.C, which is also worth visiting.

There are two excellent hotels in the area in case your day trip turns into an overnight stay: Cape Sounio Grecotel with a stunning view of the Aegean Sea and the temple of Poseidon, and Aegeon Hotel, built right next to the sea, combining comfort and peace while offering luxurious accommodations in style. The beach at Legrena is ideal for a relaxing swim, followed by a meal of fresh fish at tavern Marida.

Nearby Lavrio is well known to yachters, who use the marina, and is also an important port to the islands close by like Kea. Silver and metal mines existed in this area in older times, and the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park is an interesting place to visit, housed in the buildings of the old French mining company and undertaking activities and cultural events, conferences and exhibitions. Four hundred different types of minerals are exhibited in the Mineral Museum at Kamariza.

The easygoing town of Lavrion offers interesting culinary experiences: handmade pasta and authentic Italian cuisine at Da Vittorio, awesome chocolate ice cream at Arte Italiana, drinks and snacks at Roloi Cafe (with lively music in the evenings) and trendy entertainment at all-day beach bar Porto Paradisio, a favorite hang-out for the young crowd.
