If you like beer, you'll love the Big Island Brewhaus. As the Big Island's newest restaurant and brewery, the Brewhaus is already known for its amazing locally-crafted, microbrewed beer. And yes, it's award-winning. Dark beer, golden ales and everything in between, their's is the best locally-brewed beer in the islands.
Located in Waimea, a far inland town with a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) theme which is a testament to the area's horse- and cowboy-laden past, it's best visited while traversing the Hamakua Coast between Hilo and Kona. Although the dining spot inspires thoughts of old European bars, the Big Island Brewhaus serves up some pretty good Mexican food.
Traditional Mexican dishes like tacos, burritos, nachos and taco salads are made with fresh local fish and other local ingredients. The restaurant offers bar, table and outdoor seating. The outside area is best for large groups and families, as there's room for children to wander around a bit.
There are always around 15 beers on the menu, many in season, so take a good look at the detailed beer menu and decide. You can also take home a growler (a half gallon) of beer in a custom Big Island Brewhaus dark brown glass vessel. Service can be on the slower side, but if you order a beer right away, you're good to go.
