If you like your history interactive and immersive then you really can’t ask for more than Viking wonderland Dublinia. This heritage centre is nestled in the heart of medieval Dublin and involves scale models of a medieval street, market and a rich merchant’s house for you to peruse. You’ll be accompanied by authentic Viking compatriots to help you navigate through this foreign territory.

Spanning the period between the arrival of the Anglo-Normans in 1170 until the closure of the monasteries in 1540, Dublinia really goes all out to create a realistic and engaging exhibition that is perfect for kids who need that little bit extra to keep them interested. You’ll get to do things like try on a Viking helmet, lie down in a Viking bed and place your head in the stocks while learning about more serious aspects of history, like investigating disease in medieval towns.

Real relics such as bones excavated from Wood Quay and unearthed historical documents are also on show, while actor-beggars pop up in the medieval street to demand donations. It’s a good mix of real education and whimsical entertainment, and you won’t find yourself having to do much of the work to keep the little ones interested. You can also buy combination tickets to enter Christ Church Cathedral afterwards if you feel like a more somber look at the city’s history for dessert.
