Several hundred feet down a shady lane from St. Patrick's is Marsh's, the oldest public library in Ireland. The facility opened in 1701 and contains an array of more than 25,000 books, many of them dating back to the 1500's. The map collection is extensive. The most unique features of the library are the small, wired rooms where rare books are chained to the wall, ready to be consulted but not moved.
