These days, everyone is talking about going green and sustainable travel. In a city like Rome with nearly 5 million residents, you can imagine how challenging it is to make green travel cheap and chic at the same time. Since opening its doors in 1999, the Beehive Hotel has won the hearts of budget-conscious travelers for offering an alternative lifestyle such as a yoga space and a vegan café to its guests all at affordable rates.

So what makes this hotel so green you ask? Well for starters, the size of the hotel which also resembles a hostel is contained. Unlike big chain hotels that often put a strain on the city, the Beehive only has 7 rooms and separate apartments nearby. The budget hotel also promotes relaxation and healthy living while on vacation. So, travelers looking to relax and do a little yoga, can feel free to use the Beehive's yoga studio for getting their workout in.
After you're done doing a little yoga, the owners welcome you to eat at their vegetarian café where all of the food is organic. The café is warm and cozy and feels more like you're eating at a friend's house rather than at a restaurant. The owners leave it up to guests to decide how much they feel the food is actually worth and pay the bill based on the spiritual connection they made with their meal.
Reading a Book in Rome — Photo courtesy of Ed YourdonThe Beehive realizes how hectic a day of touring the city can be and for that reason, they have created several soothing spaces and a green oasis where you can sit and read a book, drink a glass of wine or even enjoy the garden. The hotel also has a reading room where you can borrow some of their books and an internet point where you can check your email. Did we mention there aren't any TVs at the Beehive? That's right. This hotel is all about promoting a peaceful and relaxing vacation that encourages travelers to socialize with one another rather than spending time sitting in front of a TV.
The Beehive was created by a Los Angeles couple who wanted to live the American dream in Rome. It's been nearly 13 years since they've been doing just that.
