The ultimate piadina — Photo courtesy of khawkins04Move over panini, the hot new alternative to the Italian sandwich has arrived in the Centro Storico of Rome. The popular and healthy fast food chain, La Piadineria has opened up a shop just minutes away from Piazza Navona and it's all the craze among the locals and tourists.
What's a piadina you ask? Similar to the American sandwich wrap, the piadina is a fresher and healthier version for those looking for a quick bite on the run and just can't face eating another panino. The shop, La Piadineria is part of a big franchise located in Northern Italy (in Lombardia and Piemonte regions) that's slowly making its way down to Rome. The new sandwich wrap shop already has locations in Rome's Euroma2 and Tor Vergata malls and also one in the neighborhood of Monti. The new location, located on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, just minutes away from Piazza Navona opened up in May.
The piadina chain first started out as a simple shop in the city Brescia in 1994. But word quickly spread about how tasty these wrap sandwiches were and the mom-and-pop operation soon transformed into a chain of more than 50 shops around Italy.
What makes these wraps so special you ask? Well, apart from the fresh ingredients the chain uses when making your wrap. The best part is that each piadina (wrap) is made to order and is made absolutely fresh and on the spot! Got a sweet tooth? No problem! La Piadineria not only specializes in lunch wraps, but they can also whip up together a decadent wrap made with nutella and fruit. How's that for buonooooo?
