Polly's Bywater Cafe is a sunny addition to the growing number of eateries in this charming downriver neighborhood. Opened by the same folks who run Mona Lisa, the consistently tasty comfort Italian in the Quarter, Polly's served breakfast/brunch and lunch Wednesday through Sunday on St. Claude Avenue. The cheery dining room is filled with art - including paintings of Polly, the owner's dog - and there is counter seating as well as a few tables outside. Start the day with a house-made Natchitoches-style sausage hand pie topped with a tangy smoked tomato sauce, or go traditional with breakfast biscuits or eggs Benedict. Lunch includes burgers and patty melts, salads and a fine version of a Philly cheesesteak (although it needs a crustier bun). One side is included, no extra charge, from fries and tator tots to cole slaw. Service is friendly, making this neighborhood stop a real gem.
