The Enrique Alférez Sculpture Garden in City Park, which opened in October 2015, honors the legacy of the well loved Mexican American artist and longtime New Orleans resident.
The Park setting is fitting because Alférez directed the sculpture program locally for the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s and created much of the decorative art within City Park. The son of a Mexican sculptor, Enrique Alférez had a deep and abiding love for the city of New Orleans, his home for 50 years. A New Orleanian from 1929 until his death in 1999, the prolific artist worked on major projects in the city, from the facade of Charity Hospital, to public art in City Park, including the Popp Fountain.
