Visitors can choose from a multitude of condominium rentals to bed and breakfasts and more conventional hotels and motels. One of the more diverse stays on the seacoast is the Green Acres Conference Center in Eliot, Maine (just an hour from Portland). This combination school and resort was developed by members of the Ba’hai faith, a Persian religious order which advocates the universality of human beliefs, more than 100 years ago.

Indeed, Green Acres recently completed a three-year construction project that vastly upgraded its lodging offerings. Private rooms within the signature Sarah Farmer Inn, in particular, have been made more expansive with queen beds, nightstands and premier bedding. Private baths are highlighted by two sinks, a nice touch for guests sharing these rooms.

Outside, a wraparound porch invites guests to curl up with their favorite book in supremely comfortable rocking chairs. Or, it is possible to simply enjoy the view of the adjoining Piscataqua River, sunlight glinting off its crystal clear waters.
The expansive grounds are great for walking, and several conference rooms can easily accommodate group meetings. Nearby, visitors can enjoy the many sights and sounds of Portsmouth, New Hampshire (located just across the river) or take advantage of the Town of Eliot’s boat launch for a relaxing cruise (or paddle, if you are a kayaker) on the Piscataqua River.
