Long regarded as a quiet river community, existing in the shadow of nearby York’s splendor as a top Maine vacation destination, South Berwick has steadily developed a growing reputation as a haven for cultural and outdoor activities.

Both Mt. Agamenticus and the Salmon Falls River, featuring mountain biking and kayaking opportunities, border this town, and notable artists – including celebrated cookbook author Kathy Gunst – call South Berwick home.

The latest addition to this rich mixture of nature and the arts is Relish, an upscale eatery in South Berwick’s eclectic arts district. Located just yards away from the mighty Salmon Falls River, this district exudes classic New England riverside living and activity with artists’ studios, small shops and simple clapboard homes.

Within this inviting setting, Relish has recently expanded upon what it calls its “modern French cuisine” with a number of highly creative dishes. The results are exciting twists to old favorites, such as its macaroni and cheese, featuring goat cheese baked with fresh gemeli pasta; deliciously tangy Salmon Aupoive with Black Bean Succotash; Curried Shrimp with Bacon Polenta; Lamb Ragu with Gnocchi pasta; and Wild Mushroom Rigatoni. The expansive menu also features gluten-free offerings, as well as a full bar, wine and beer list. Service is knowledgeable, efficient and friendly and the décor is slightly funky but intimate.
