Located in nearby South Portland, Scratch Baking goes to great lengths to create the classic bagel – crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. It is more than enough to satisfy even the most discerning bagel lover.

Aside from bagels, owners Bob Johnson, Allison Reid and Sonja Swanberg incorporate the same attention to technique and quality into their other baked goods offerings.  Their original vision of a grab-and-go bakery has resulted in an expansive universe of sweets and treats that include breads, bagels, and pastries. The magic of this process is their handmade approach to baking. Dough is hand cut and shaped and the baking itself is done in small batches. They even use their own starting agents for dough raising. The result are baked products that feature a deep, rich flavor while also having a longer storage life.

Scratch Baking’s offerings of bread are also impressive. Each day of the week is devoted to a different bread type. They include: Mondays – Organic Cracked Wheat; Tuesdays – Sunflower Spelt;  Wednesdays – Black Bread and Sprouted Grain and Seed; Thursdays – German Power Pack and Whole 9 Multi-Grain; Fridays – Maine Potato; Saturdays – Cherry Oatmeal; and Sundays – Anadama and Muesli Breads. Customers are advised to call ahead to confirm bread and bagel availability. Enjoy!
